Set of Three Antique Sewing Boxes with applied cut-paper designs on wood, finished with a light oil, very much like the one in the Brooklyn Museum (see page 163 of the Korean Art Collection in the Brooklyn Museum, 2006). The Brooklyn box is only one box, whereas this box is three nesting boxes. The pairs of bats on the lid of each box are a symbol of happiness. The Korean Taeguk symbol adorns the lids and sides of each box. With one more section than the two-sectioned yin and yang symbol, the three-sectioned Korean Samtaeguk symbolizes Heaven (red), Earth (green) and Humankind (yellow), which combine and interlock to form the supreme ultimate unity of cosmological forces. A nice example of the old tradition of Korean Hanji (Paper) Art. Large Box: 20.5 x 12.75 x 5.5 inches, 52 x 32.5 x 14 cm; Medium Box: 18.25 x 11 x 5 inches, 46.5 x 28 12.5 cm; Small Box: 16.25 x 9 x 4 inches, 41 x 23 x 10 cm.
