A Rare and Stunning Silver and Multi-Colored Enamel Eunjangdo, Korean Woman's Dagger and Chopsticks Set beautifully rendered with a rare design of akebia mountain root, chrysanthemum (symbol of fertility), and peaches (symbol of immortality). Eunjangdo, an ornamental dagger, was worn mostly by women of rank as a chest pendant and a symbol of their social standing. This dagger also served as a tool to save women from personal humiliation or peril, not by attacking an assailant but by killing themselves, under the Confucian moral obligation of medieval Korea 'to remain faithful to one spouse'. The motif of the heavenly peach of immortality assures the woman that her act of honor will give her immortality. The silver chopsticks were used to detect poison in food, and fit nicely into the sheath in the back. A small bell is attached to repel bad spirits and to summon good spirits. A rare and gorgeous piece of Korean folk art. 7 inches, 18 cm.

Old Woman's Dagger (Eunjangdo) and Chopsticks Set with Engraved Symbolic and Idyllic Setting. There are two finely engraved scenes, one with a deer under a pine tree and moon (all three are symbols of long life), and another beautifully engraved scene has a deer under a bamboo tree. The bamboo is a symbol of resilience and principle. When faced with a strong wind, the bamboo bends but does not break, just as the person with determination and principle, even when pressed down, doesn't give up and resumes their upright posture. The symbolism of the bamboo, with the deer, a symbol of long life and immortality, combines to make a statement about life-long, eternal resilience and adherence to principle. The lotus blossom in the middle of the sheath is a symbol of purity. The back of the sheath is engraved with heavenly peaches of immortality. Eunjangdo, an ornamental dagger, was worn mostly by women of rank as a chest pendant and a symbol of their social standing. This dagger also served as a tool to save women from personal humiliation or peril, not by attacking an assailant but by killing themselves, under the Confucian moral obligation of medieval Korea 'to remain pure'. The silver chopsticks were used to detect poison in food, and fit nicely into the sheath in the back. One chopstick is adorned with a peony leaf, a symbol of prosperity. The abundance of beautifully stated symbolism served to inspire a lady to eternal devotion. The 6.5 inches, 16.5 cm.

Eunjangdo (women's daggers) are usually made of silver, but you sometimes, though rarely, see women's daggers of wood and metal, like this fine and lovely example. These were in use during just a brief period in the late 19th Century. We were fortunate to come into a collection belonging to a Korean man who collected late Joseon Dynasty wood eunjangdos, and all six examples here on our website are the best from that collection. This elegant example has metal bands of peaches of immortality, the fruit eaten by immortals and a symbol of longevity, and metalwork peonies (a symbol of abundance or wealth), plum blossoms (a symbol of courage) and a sculpted lotus blossom (symbol of purity) attachment, a cup in the form of the heavenly peach of immortality, and a larger lotus blossom atop a bell. The metal bell was believed to ward off evil spirits. This dagger served as a tool to save women from personal humiliation or peril, not by attacking an assailant but by killing themselves, under the Confucian moral obligation 'to remain pure'. The abundant and beautifully stated symbolism served to inspire a lady to courage and honor. 8 inches (20cm) long.
