Very Fine and Rare Goryeo Dynasty Inlaid Celadon Cosmetic Box, 12th to 13th Century. The last photo here is a similar example that was in Christie's September 22, 2005 Sale of Japanese and Korean Art. We are sure you will agree that the Christie's example is not as refined, detailed, and beautifully designed as the piece that we offer here, with its inlaid lotus, geese, willow tree, and reeds. The condition is also excellent. On the side, you can see two small spaces where the potter's fingers covered the glaze. This is original to the piece so it is not a condition issue. It is in pretty much its original condition. The Christie's example was estimated at $10,000 to $15,000, 10 years ago. Dimensions: 4.75 inches wide, 3 inches high (50% larger than the Christie's example, which was 3.25 inches wide).

Set of Three Nesting Wood Boxes covered with Applied Hand-Cut Paper Designs, finished with a light oil, very much like the one in the Brooklyn Museum (see page 163 of the Korean Art Collection in the Brooklyn Museum, 2006). All of the boxes are lined with budok talismanic prints. The prints alone are rare and valuable. You will never find another set like this. The bats are a symbol of happiness. The Korean Taeguk symbol adorns the lids and sides of each box. With one more section than the two-sectioned yin and yang symbol, the three-sectioned Korean Samtaeguk symbolizes Heaven (red), Earth (green) and Humankind (yellow), which combine and interlock to form the supreme ultimate unity of cosmological forces. A nice example of the old tradition of Korean Hanji (Paper) Art. Large Box: 19.25 x 11.5 x 6.75 inches, 49 x 29 x 17 cm; Medium Box: 17.5 x 9.75 x 5.5 inches, 44.5 x 24.75 x 14 cm; Small Box: 15.75 x 8 x 4.75 inches, 40 x 20.25 x 12 cm.

Korean Scholar's Inkstone Box constructed entirely of paulownia wood, a very desirable wood for scholars and collectors because of its unique and beautiful grain and its natural bug repellent qualities. Below the inkstone compartment there is a larger compartment for holding what was called the scholar's four friends: brush, ink, paper, and inkstone. The inkstone box was a Korean scholar's most treasured item. This is a beautiful and fine example. Its simple, quiet beauty was perfect for the scholar's Confucian aesthetic, and will look great with any kind of decor. 12.5 x 8 x 8 inches, 32 x 20 x 20 cm.

Pair of Nesting Wood Boxes covered with Applied Hand-Cut Paper Designs, finished with a light oil, very much like the one in the Brooklyn Museum (see page 163 of the Korean Art Collection in the Brooklyn Museum, 2006). The Brooklyn box is only one box, whereas this box is two nesting boxes. The butterflies are a symbol of happiness, and the peonies are a symbol of prosperity. Larger Box: 19.75 x 12.25 x 5.75 inches, 50 x 31 x 14.5 cm; Smaller Box: 18.25 x 10.75 x 5.25 inches, 46.25 x 27.5 x 13.5 cm.

Very Rare 19th Century Korean Woven Bamboo and Willow Gori Basket and Lid with a beautiful dark patina and very creative use of the bamboo and willow, on both the exterior and interior of the basket. When you see so much extra time and creativity devoted to the inside of the basket like this, that means that this one-of-a-kind work of art was created by a very dedicated and caring artisan. For a similar Korean Bamboo and Willow Gori Basket, please see page 106 of Korean Cultural Heritage 2, published in 2002. 12 x 3 inches, 30.5 x 7.5 cm.

Beautiful Korean Antique Painted Box with Pairs of Cranes and Sparrows and Plum Blossoms. The paired birds are an ancient symbol of eternal love (the crane was believed to mate for life) and the plum blossom is a symbol of courage, because it blooms early, before winter is finished. These types of boxes are very rare because they were made only during a very short period of time at the very end of the Joseon Dynasty, in the last decade of the 19th Century and first decade of the 20th Century (1890s and 1900s). The paintings are custom made for the boxes and are then mounted onto the boxes. Similar examples of painted boxes can be seen in the book, Korean Furniture and Culture (pages 85 and 86) by Yoon Bokcha, Chi Soon, and Park Youngsoon; and Korean Collection, University of Michigan Museum of Art (page 273). This box has a lovely new lock. 16.5d x 12w x 3.25h inches, 42d x 30.5w x 8.25h cm.

Korean Antique Painted Box with a Charming Deer Couple under a Stately Pine Tree, with a Butterfly Lock, and luxuriously silk-lined. The butterfly is an ancient symbol of happiness in Korea. The pine tree and the deer are symbols of longevity, and a pair of deer is a symbol of love. These two meaning combine here to give a beautiful rendition of 'eternal love'. These types of boxes are very rare because they were made only during a very short period of time at the very end of the Joseon Dynasty, in the last decade of the 19th Century and first decade of the 20th Century (1890s and 1900s).
