One-Of-A-Kind Korean Four-Piece Red Lacquered Chest (Sa Cheung Nong) with carved and painted Birds and Flowers and Butterflies. A Grand and Very Rare piece of Late Joseon Dynasty furniture in excellent condition. The butterflies are a symbol of happiness. Because plum blossoms bloom early, when winter is not quite finished, they are a symbol of courage. The pairs of sparrows in plum trees symbolize marital bliss. The Sino-Korean word for sparrows is 'chak', which also means 'joy'. Two sparrows are 'chak chak', which is read as 'joy and happiness'. 76.5 x 30.5 x 12 inches, 194 x 77.5 x 30.5 cm.
