| 18th Century Crab and Reeds Painting signed Joseon Simwong sa. This painting sold for $2280 at Christie's March 28, 2006 sale of the Robert Moore Collection, the foremost collection of Korean art in America. This painting is skillfully-rendered with delicate brushwork and a sophisticated palette of ink shades. The crab with reeds symbolizes the passing of the state examinations with honors from the king. The word for crab, 'kap', means a 'hard thing' and can also mean 'first place in the examinations'. The word for reeds, jeollo, sounds like 'jeollyeo', which is food cooked in the king's kitchen and given by the king to students who were successful in the examinations. Scroll: 45.5 x 12.25 inches, 115.5 x 31 cm; Painting: 17.5 x 10 inches, 44.5 x 25.5 cm. Ink on paper. | ||
