Bojagi with a Bountiful Bouquet of Beautiful Flowers
A silk bojagi wrapping cloth with embroidered butterflies (symbol of marital bliss) and an abundant variety of beautifully embroidered Korean flora: peonies, chrysanthemums, lilies, carnations, and irises on a beautiful purple silk ground with woven flowers. Purple was a royal color and its use was restricted to aristocracy. The loop, which normally appears on the on the front, is on the back of this bojagi. So this bojagi was likely used for both the wrapping and the presentation of its contents. For example, silverware could be wrapped with the silverware on top of the bojagi's face so that the back of the cloth formed the exterior of the wrap, and the loop handle would have facilitated carrying it this way. More importantly, when you opened this seemingly plain white cloth, it would open to reveal its precious contents on top of this beautiful bojagi. This bojagi was chosen for this special function because of its superior beauty. 21 x 21 inches, 53.5 x 53.5 cm.
