Very Rare Wide-Grained Korean Ash Wood Soban Personal Dining Table with Floral Crest. Purchased from Koreana Art and Antiques in the 1980's. Chaekgeori, paintings depicting books and scholar's items, are abundant with symbols of diligence, motivation, good fortune and virtue. Chaekgeori are uniquely Korean, despite the fact that many of the items depicted in a Chaekgeori are Chinese. The Joseon Dynasty Korean scholar had much respect for Chinese art and learning, but expressed that admiration in a uniquely Korean manner through Chaekgeori. We see items here that indicate refined comfort, but more important than the sense of gentility that is conveyed, is the ideal of self-improvement to which everyone could aspire: rich or poor, young or old. Though the items depicted were not readily available to the poor, the Chaekgeori could inspire them nonetheless. Adults enjoyed them, but they would also be placed in children's rooms to teach them the value and beauty of culture and learning. French artists as early as the 1880's saw ideas in this genre that they imported into their own art. Frame: 29 x 16.75 inches, 73.5 x 42.5 cm; Painting: 23.75 x 11.5 inches, 60.5 x 29 cm. Mineral pigments on old hand-woven silk.
