This hat was displayed in an exhibition of antique Korean hats at the Korea Society, and was featured in the New York Times Style section. Fashion designers, such as Carolina Herrera, recognize the beauty and uniqueness of traditional Korean hats and have been using them as part of their ensembles. In the 19th Century, the Japanese called Korea 'The Land of Hats' because the Koreans had a hat for every occasion and every position in society. This is a rare Antique Pungcha, Korean Winter Hat of Fur and Silk. This elegant and uniquely Korean hat, with a most beautiful form, is often seen in period paintings, and now only on this website, as you will not likely see another for sale. The ear flaps of this hat could be flipped up and tied together in the back when the weather wasn't so cold. This antique hat is being offered here at a price that is lower than what it would cost to have it made by an artisan in Korea today. 14.5 inches (36.75cm) tall.

A similar jar acquired from us is published on page 86 of the Smithsonian catalogue, Symbols of Identity. The Haeju jar that we offer here has freely and beautifully painted cobalt blue chrysanthemum sprays, whose many petals are a symbol of abundance or fertility. In 1883, when royal support for the Bunwon kins ended, the kilns in Haeju, North Korea took over in a big way. Though Haeju jars are quite affordable, even the most serious collectors and major museums have them in their collections, because they are admired for their beautiful and freely expressive brushwork. Haeju kilns did not have to follow the restrictive rules and iconography of the royal kilns, so the painting in underglaze cobalt blue is bold, free, and very creative. Recent Korean Art Society events at the Brooklyn Museum and the Burke Collection included the viewing of Haeju ceramics in both of these very prominent Korean collections. The fun in collecting Haeju jars is in relying on your eye and your taste to choose the best-rendered examples, which we feel we have provided here for you. Height: 9.5 inches (24 cm), Circumference: 34.75 inches (88.25 cm).

The persimmon's many seeds are a symbol of many blessings such as the joy of many friends or many children. In 1883, when royal support for the Bunwon kins ended, the kilns in Haeju, North Korea took over in a big way. Fine and Beautifully Embroidered Spoon and Chopstick Case (Sujeohjip) with peonies (symbol of prosperity), butterfly (happiness), bamboo (integrity), pine tree (longevity), and the mythical bullocho longevity plant. The deer and cranes are longevity symbols, and when they are paired like this, they are symbols of eternal love. The spoon symbolizes sustenance and life, so it was appropriate for it to be kept in such a beautiful embroidered case. This wonderful spoon and chopstick case is further adorned with silk tassels and a nice example of Madeup, the Korean art of knotting. The characters on the back translate to "five blessings for one hundred years". It must have been a proud possession of a Korean housewife many years ago. 10 x 4 inches, 25.5 x 10 cm.

Set of Three Nesting Wood Boxes covered with Applied Hand-Cut Paper Designs, finished with a light oil, very much like the one in the Brooklyn Museum (see page 163 of the Korean Art Collection in the Brooklyn Museum, 2006). All of the boxes are lined with budok talismanic prints. The prints alone are rare and valuable. You will never find another set like this. The bats are a symbol of happiness. The Korean Taeguk symbol adorns the lids and sides of each box. With one more section than the two-sectioned yin and yang symbol, the three-sectioned Korean Samtaeguk symbolizes Heaven (red), Earth (green) and Humankind (yellow), which combine and interlock to form the supreme ultimate unity of cosmological forces. A nice example of the old tradition of Korean Hanji (Paper) Art.
