Antique Korean Coin Chest, Donkwe. 20h x 32w x 15d, 51h x 81w x 38d m. Coin chests are highly prized by collectors of Korean antiques. Paper money did not exist in Joseon Dynasty Korea, and the coins were of very small denominations. They had to be strung together in large, heavy quantities to have any worth, so a strong money box was a necessity. Mattie Ingold, an American missionary physician who worked in Jeonju, wrote: "If Korean money were proportionately as great in value as it is in weight and clumsiness, the Koreans would be a very wealthy people."

Korean 19th Century Sansin the Mountain Spirit Painting with a Fantastic Tiger. Korean tiger folk paintings are revered throughout the art world for their unique depictions of the tiger's humor and charm. You will not find a better example of the beloved Korean folk tiger than the fantastic fellow depicted here. He is exploding with personality. In a country where most of the land is covered by mountains, it makes sense that Sansin the Mountain God is the most revered of Korea's native deities. He is the god most often appealed to for fertility, prosperity, and longevity. This Sansin is a great example of the open-minded syncretism of ancient Korean belief. He is a deity of purely Korean Shamanist origin, crowned by a Confucian hat, carrying Daoist mythical bullocho longevity plants in a basket on his staff, while wearing a Buddhist robe. For his scepter, he holds a wood staff as gnarled as the pine tree under which he sits. The pine tree is a symbol of longevity and tenacity. The feather fan he holds in his left hand is used to control the wind spirit and other nature spirits. Sansin paintings can be found in the Sansin-gak shrine of Korean Buddhist temples. Sansin's tiger is the animal lord of the mountain and the messenger for Sansin and the enforcer of his will. Ink and colors on silk. Frame: 36 x 34 inches, 91.5 x 86.5 cm. Painting: 27.5 x 25.5 inches, 70 x 65 cm.

A Very Rare 19th Century Painting of Dokseong and Pine Tree Under the Moon. Dokseong is Korea's ancient Hermit Saint. Antique Dokseong paintings are almost never available for purchase. The last one we had was twelve years ago. This gorgeous painting has a phenomenal dark patina that could only have developed through years of ritual use and adds greatly to the contemplative beauty and serenity of this very special work of art. Dokseong is pictured in an inspiring remote mountain forest, a Daoist style landscape where he seeks solitude and self-cultivation. The pine tree and moon are both ancient symbols of longevity and wisdom. His attire is that of a Buddhist monk. He has been revered for centuries by Buddhists and Shamans. Paintings of Dokseong are the most constant companions of Sanshin (Mountain God) paintings in the Sanshin-gak Shrine of Buddhist temples in Korea. Some temples even give Dokseong his own shrine, the Dokseong-gak. Frame: 33.25 x 22 inches (84.5 x 56 cm), Painting: 22.75 x 15 inches (58 x 38 cm).
