17th Century White Tara Tibetan Thangka. The White Tara goddess symbolizes transcendent knowledge and purity. In ancient Tibet, it was believed that Tara was reincarnated in every virtuous and pious woman. She was born from the eye of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and became his wife. Most of these thangka were photographed through glass frames, so there may be a little blurriness. This thankga was in an exhibition at the University of Texas Art Museum. Mineral pigments on silk. 11 x 9 inches, 28 x 23 cm.

Rare Nepalese Shaman's Ritual Harness and Belt Suit of Bells, Feathers, Animal Hide, Shells, Fur, Metal, and Fabric. An old and rare piece that was used in rituals performed by a West Nepalese Shaman of the Magar Tribe in the Rukum District. Beautifully mounted and displayed on a custom metal stand. The suit was constructed in the 19th Century, but many of the bells used in constructing the suit date as far back as the 16th Century. 32 inches, 81 cm.

Sri Lankan Monkey Mask used in the Kolam Natima Fetus Protection Ritual Drama that was performed when a tribe member was pregnant. The tribe's Edura (Shaman) wears the mask in the Kolam Natima masked dance-drama, and portrays a monkey who dances and cavorts to placate the demons that threaten the health of the unborn child. This particular mask is wonderfully rendered, with his ear-to-ear grin and bulging eyes, and the beautiful original pigments are still intact. Rare Antique Korean Spirit Shrine Painting (Kam Mo Yo Je Do). Spirit House Paintings are in the collections of several major museums. This painting would have been placed in a place of reverence in the home, and on the anniversary of an ancestor's death, a slip of paper with the ancestor's name would be placed on the blank space in the open doorway of the shrine in the painting and a ritual would have been performed in front of the painting. Kammo means 'to adore with deep emotion' and Yoje means 'to respectfully address the spirits as if they were at the ceremony', and Do means 'painting'. Ink on paper. Frame: 37.5 x 27 inches, 95 x 68.5 cm; Painting: 31 x 21 inches, 79 x 53.5 cm.

Beautifully Rendered and Painted Korean Rooster Funerary Figure. Funerary figures (kkoktu), were used on the funeral bier. Traditionally, these figures would be burned after their use, but thankfully this one survived the pyre and what was intended to be an ephemeral existence. It was removed to the home and used as a good luck and guardian figure to bless and protect the home. Because it was believed that the rooster's morning cry drove away the night's evil spirits, an important talisman to ward off evil spirits was wood-carved roosters. They are a very important icon in traditional Korean folk art and in Korean tradition in general. The rooster’s comb symbolizes intelligence; traditional officials’ hats are based on the comb. The claws mean strength. The rooster was called the 'clock bird' and was sacred to Koreans. 14h x 9w inches, 35.5h x 23w cm.
