19th Century Korean Wood Spool (Silpae) for winding and unwinding thread for embroidery and sewing. The form and design of this spool makes it one of the most beautiful antique Korean spools we have ever seen. It is adorned with lovely carved plum blossoms, symbol of courage (because the plum blossom blooms early, when winter is not quite finished), and it is encircled with rieul (ㄹ) characters to symbolize eternal continuity. This is a great example of the love and care that went into the design of an everyday object that was dear to the lady of a 19th Korean home. It has a beautiful patina from many years of adoring use. 8 x 2.5 inches, 20 x 6.5 cm.
