Rare Red Lacquered Inkstone Box of Drawers with symbolic metalwork: bullocho (mythical longevity plant) lock plates, bat (symbol of happiness) drawer pulls, and swallowtail (symbol of beauty) braces. The inkstone box was a Korean scholar's most treasured item. He handled it every day, when he would take out the contents to write and paint. The lid opens to reveal the compartment for the inkstone. The drawers hold the brush, ink, and paper. Together these, with the inkstone, are the "scholar's four friends." An inkstone box in royal red lacquer is exceedingly scarce. 11.5 D x 9.75 H x 8.25 W.

The blade is well-forged with traces of temperline; there is a visible kizu at the spine on one side. Habaki is copper, guard is brass and the menuki are brass, while the fuchi is iron or shakudo with a little gold inlay; it was made without a kashira. The seppa are brass, with one carved from horn. The scabbard is black-lacquered wood; it and the tsuka are delicately bound with linen, using a style of wrapping which is subtly different from the Japanese. These are elaborately decorated with taeguk motifs and numerous small inscriptions, together with a tree at the distal end. The scabbard shows embellishments in yellow at the center on either side composed of taeguk signs and characters. Overall length is 31 inches (79 cm), blade is 21.25 inches (54 cm). Condition is untouched, excellent original condition with light wear from use.

Large 19th Century Korean Sharkskin Jang Geom Sword with Silver Overlay. The scabbard is covered in sharkskin and lacquered black over that. The handle is very interesting and is covered in sharkskin underneath the heavy leather wrapping, and over the sharkskin there is a thick brass foil that is hammered to look like sharkskin. This is a unique technique. The end fitting is missing. The crossguard is shaky because there are a few washers missing from the sword. The blade goes all the way in the scabbard tightly but is off-center by about half an inch. 61.5 inches, 155 cm.
