This pair of pillow ends is the oldest Korean embroidery we have ever found for sale, about 200 years old, from the early 19th Century. Please look especially at the close-up photos to appreciate the very fine technique employed in the details of this marvelous and rare pair. The peonies are a symbol of love and prosperity, and the butterflies are a symbol of happiness. Only very old fabric has such warm colors, and only the old embroiderers would have had the dedication and work ethic required to render such a masterpiece of early Korean embroidery. Each pillow end is 6 inches (15cm) wide.

Rare 19th Century Korean Twelve-Sided Tiger Leg (Cabriole Leg) Side-Dish Table (Gyeot-ban) of Zelkova Wood from Gyeonggi Province, used to place tea bowls. The name Seo Myeong is painted on the bottom of the table. There is an identical table from the Ewha Museum collection in the book that is the bible on the subject, Traditional Korean Furniture (page 83, photo 93) and on page 70 in the book, Dining Tables: Korean Traditional Handicrafts, both by my friend and mentor, Man Sill Pai. She writes, "These tiger-legged tables have strong legs of aggressive lines sharply pinched in at the ankles. The plates were made of a single piece of plank and the legs, with their well-shaped calves and thin ankles, were fixed into unobtrusive aprons. Tiger-legged tables were favored for ritual use in the royal palace." 11.75 inches (30 cm) wide x 5.25 inches (13.5 cm) tall.

Very Rare 18th Century Korean Coin Chest (Donkwe) with all six sides made of Zelkova Wood. You will never find another like this. With zelkova wood supplies dwindling at the end of the 18th Century, Koreans started making coin chests of zelkova on 4 sides, and pine on 2 sides. By the end of the 19th Century, coin chests were made either entirely of pine, or pine on 4 sides and zelkova on 2 sides. You will never find an older or more beautiful piece of Korean antique furniture. Coin chests are highly prized by collectors, as their purpose required that they be the heaviest and most well constructed piece of furniture in the home. Paper money did not exist in Joseon Dynasty Korea, and the coins were of very small denominations. They had to be strung together in large, heavy quantities to have any worth, so a strong money box was a necessity. Here's a funny quote from 1898 on Korean money by Mattie Ingold, an American missionary physician who worked in Jeonju: "If Korean money were proportionately as great in value as it is in weight and clumsiness, the Koreans would be a very wealthy people." This coin chest is likely the oldest one to be offered for sale. It is missing the lock plate, but is otherwise in good condition. 28w x 17d x 17h inches, 71w x 43d x 43h cm.

Dhyangro drums are usually separated from their phurba (ritual dagger) handles, and the handles are sold by themselves. This is a common occurrence with Nepali dealers. This is because the handles are easier to transport and sell. So it isn't very often that you see a completely intact, old Tibetan ritual drum. The drum is made of wood and animal hide, and has shaking balls inside for accenting the rhythms created by the shaman dancer. The handle is a wonderfully carved wood phurba (ritual dagger) with multiple faces. An old and beautiful piece that displays nicely. From the collection of Sam Hilu, prominent collector and author on Asian and African art. 26 x 15 x 5 inches, 66 x 38 x 13 cm.

Set of Three Nesting Wood Boxes covered with Applied Hand-Cut Paper Designs and finished with a light oil. This is very much like the one in the Brooklyn Museum (see page 163 of the Korean Art Collection in the Brooklyn Museum, 2006). The Brooklyn box is only one box, whereas this is three nesting boxes. The Korean Taeguk symbol adorns the lids and sides of each box, along with stylized floral designs. With one more section than the two-sectioned yin and yang symbol, the three-sectioned Korean Samtaeguk symbolizes Heaven (red), Earth (green) and Humankind (yellow), which combine and interlock to form the supreme ultimate unity of cosmological forces. Large Box: 18 x 10 x 5 inches, 45.75 x 25.5 x 12.75 cm; Medium Box: 16.25 x 8.5 x 4 inches, 41.25 x 21.5 x 10 cm; Small Box: 14.5 x 7.25 x 3.5 inches, 37 x 18.5 x 9 cm.

A Very Rare 19th Century Korean Black Lacquered Mother of Pearl Soban (individual dining table), with cranes (symbols of immortality, and eternal love when they are paired, as they are here), pine tree (symbol of longevity), orchids (symbol of purity and modesty), bullocho (the mythical longevity plant) and bamboo (symbol of resilience). There is loss to some of the mother of pearl, but it can be replaced by a Korean artisan. This is reflected in the very low price for this fine, beautiful, and rare piece. We do not restore or refinish our items. We leave it up to the client to decide if they want to do it. 15w x 12d x 9.25h inches, 38w x 30.5d x 23.5h cm.
